LA Times: Beverly Hills district sues to block subway tunnel under school

Leaders of the Beverly Hills Unified School District made good on their word Wednesday and sued county transportation officials over the route of the $5.6-billion Westside subway extension.

It’s full steam ahead for the Los Angeles Metro’s Westside subway extension. Yesterday, the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority board approved a plan for the subway to go under Beverly Hills High.

The board is moving forward despite ardent and vocal opposition on behalf of Beverly Hills residents. Detractors say that tunneling under the school would limit development opportunities on the property and it could put students in danger, especially given the risk of earthquakes. However, several seismologists dismissed this claim and assure that the presence of the $5.6-billion project will do no harm…

NBC: Beverly Hills Residents Tell Metro Why They Oppose Subway Path

The Metro board heard from critics Thursday of its Westside Subway Extension plan, which would require tunneling under Beverly Hills High School.

Los Angeles' transportation agency wants to build a rail line that would connect downtown to Westside communities like Beverly Hills

The video begins with a hand twisting open a gas main. "Methane gas, toxic chemicals and teenagers don't mix," a voice says. "But this dangerous combination is on the verge of exploding at Beverly High, turning the school into a megadisaster." Then, boom! A huge fireball erupts on screen, accompanied by the sound of an explosion. The scene segues into footage of students walking peacefully to class, suggesting to viewers that innocent teenagers could soon be reduced to ashes.

Released by the Beverly Hills school district's parent-teacher council, the video is the latest escalation in a battle over a proposed subway extension between the small, affluent community and the Los Angeles transportation agency, known as Metro.
